How To: Launch An LMP1 Car

Yesterday morning, Imagine Dragons’ ‘Thunder’ popped up on my Spotify on my way into work. That’s the track we launched the G60-LT-P1 to in January this year. Listening to the music got me thinking; As the 2018 season gets underway once again, how lucky I am to be able to do what I do, and to be involved in such an incredible project.

 

When I joined Ginetta in 2012, we had three single-make championships; Challenge, Juniors and SuperCup. Since then, we’ve added the GRDC, G40 Cup and the LMP3, G57, G58 and LMP1 cars to our portfolio. As the solo PR Executive at Ginetta towers, each project is something I’ve had the privilege of being involved in and it’s only when you look back, you realise how much you’ve done.

Listening to Dan Reynolds’ vocals (I’ve got ‘Thunder’ on repeat whilst I hurriedly write this before 9am) I’m reminiscing about the G60-LT-P1 project which has seen us go from a ‘technical launch’ at Silverstone on 14 April 2017 (53 weeks ago), to unveiling not one, but two LMP1 cars to the world.

This is hands down the most exciting project for me to have worked on. The LMP1 Technical Launch a year ago gave me the opportunity to work on the event with my best friend Lo Parsons to deliver something that would inspire and show our statement of intent. You’d never believe we pulled it together within just a few weeks and a shead load of chia seeds. The latter was to keep us full up and stop us snacking on Fox’s Biscuits.

It was only when we sat there, in Hall Four of the Silverstone Wing looking at a room of people who had come to hear more about the project, that we allowed ourselves to really consider the fact that yes kids, we are building an LMP1 car and we’re going to Le Mans for real. *Scream*

Where else can you work for a business and be allowed to rope in your best friend and be empowered to just ‘get on’ with the launch of an LMP1 car? We were given carte blanche to choose how we filled a massive space. We went with the idea of an art gallery-style launch (enter #plinthgate), with various elements of the LMP1 on display, such as the engine, gearbox and steering wheel. Think of it as our version of a Master Chef ‘deconstructed’ dish.

Fast forward nine months and I was planning how to unveil the actual car at the Autosport International Show. I didn’t have my best friend by my side for that one, but ASI is a lot easier of a proposition, because you sort of know the drill. Again though, it was a really special feeling to be told that a £1m+ car would be turning up to Birmingham’s NEC and it was up to us how to show it off to the public.

Okay, to be perfectly honest, at the time it was absolutely terrifying. I didn’t sleep a wink the day before the show, feverishly texting my entire phone book to check they would be on our stand by 10:30am, but it came good in the end.  I made sure I bought plenty of prosecco for the pre-launch drinks reception, just in case it didn’t.

The launch of a brand new car and the team, CEFC TRSM, attracts so much publicity in their own right that the stand was packed to the rafters by the time the covers came off to the sound of Thunder. I still don’t know if that was the song, or the rapturous applause for what us Yorkshire folks had achieved.
